What is FiveM and how does it work
FiveM is a free multiplayer mod for GTA V that lets you play on independent servers with their own rules: roleplay, racing, freeroam or survival. Here is what you need to know before joining.
FiveM in one sentence
FiveM is a multiplayer mod for GTA V built by Cfx.re (now part of Rockstar) that lets you play on independent servers with their own rules, maps and mechanics. It is not a separate game: it runs on top of your GTA V copy and adds the multiplayer layer GTA Online does not offer.
Key point: every server is a different world. The same FiveM can host a serious whitelisted roleplay community, a drift competition or a survival server. The server defines the experience, not the mod.
How it works
- FiveM client: installs on your PC and launches GTA V with the mod loaded.
- Server: hosted by a community; runs resources written in Lua, JavaScript or C#.
- OneSync: the technology that syncs hundreds of players and entities in one world.
- Resources: scripts that add jobs, vehicles, inventories, phones, HUDs and roleplay systems.
When you join a server, your client downloads that server's resources (sometimes several GB) and runs them, which is why the first connection takes longer than later ones.
FiveM is not GTA Online
GTA Online is Rockstar's official multiplayer: one world, fixed rules. FiveM is a platform where each community runs its own server, enabling roleplay, custom economies and mods GTA Online does not allow. It also means quality varies enormously: there are carefully built projects and abandoned servers.
What you need to play
- A legitimate GTA V copy for PC (Steam, Epic or Rockstar).
- Windows 10/11 and hardware similar to the base game's requirements.
- The free FiveM client from
fivem.net. - Patience for rules: roleplay servers usually require registration or a whitelist.
There is no official console version. On Linux you can play through Wine/Proton, but it is not the supported path.
Server types you will find
Check the numbers before you pick a server
The official FiveM list shows names and player counts, but not whether the project is healthy. On FivePulse you can look up any server by name or cfx.re/join/… code and see players now, 24-hour average and peak, 7- and 30-day history and recent outages — the fastest way to rule out dead servers before downloading their resources.
